Think Before You Hit “Send”
I am curious for what did you do when you wake up this morning. Did you pray to God, tidy your bedroom up or in a rush looking for your smartphone then tweet “Thank God for another day, for another chance to breath”, or take a selfie and after do some filter on the app with your amazingly editing skill, upload it to Instagram with caption “oh, this is my ugly face without make up and just wake up”. But actually, your bare face on those photo was stunning though. Or are you probably reading this article on your gadget now?
It is hard to admit how our life has changed until we stop for a moment and look at how different it is from ten years ago. We realize that now we live in what is called communication era and highly supported by technology. The growing ubiquity of cell phones, especially the rising of smartphones users, has made social networking just a finger tap away. Most people of the world knew exactly what was happening, got pieces of real information in real time, as soon as it happened.
The use of social media is not merely a pervasive social trend, but has become an established phenomenon that people can no longer afford to ignore. Nowadays, It’s weird if you don’t have any social media account, Isn’t it? When you’re going out, reading book, watching movie, listening to song, got a gift or been through a special moment, wearing branded pieces on your whole body, yes, you’re more likely to have content and experiences that you want to share now. It becomes a habit on a typical day, and day by day a new platforms continue to developed. Path, Instagram, LinkedIn, SnapChat, Periscope and many more appear to fulfil our needs and to show our existence.
I am 22 years old and a worker from 8 am to 5 pm and find social media networking helpful a lot on my job, and also my society’s life. I use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance my career and business prospects in other countries, to improve my communication skill in many language, widen my personal knowledge and help me to discover things I never knew before. And great part thanks to social media, I can share good thing to the good world by writing on a good website, FOKAL!.
However, the social media comes as double-edged sword. If you’re using it not wise enough, it may actually ended up hurting yourself and otherselves. Why?Because on other side, social media sites are one of the leading places for bullying and crime. In old times, people were bullied at school or in the neighborhood at home.
Nowadays, people experience bullying, whether they are being bullied, bullying someone or witnessing it on social media. According to a report released by Pew Research’s Internet Project, 65 percent of young adults 18 to 29 in the United States said that they had been harassed online, and 92 percent had witnessed someone else being bullied. Last week, I found video showing a group of student harassing a girl on social media. The student shouted and kicked, as the girl appeared trapped and in distress. I can’t imagine how teenagers did such dreadful action, and bravely recorded then shared it to social media. I can’t find any reason to feel it cool and funny too. How could it be?
There is no doubt that there are many reasons to love social media. Why don’t we try to spread happiness and share advantage of the use of social media. Thing has big impact when it happens on right time, to right person with right reason. As we become more comfortable with communicating and sharing online, we still need to keep in mind that what we post has the potential to get us into trouble. We are also responsible for our contributions and for any possible consequences based on our online posting. We must always consider how the words, images, videos, content we publish might be interpreted by our follower. Is it important? Is it useful to others? Or anybody on trouble or being hurted if I post this?
Instead of sending hurtful comment and opinion, Good luck! Be Happy! Awesome! Beautiful! these short words don’t communicate much of message, but when spoken at the the precise moment in the right circumstance, they could be extremely important and bring happiness to others. Thing to be remembered, words and actions are powerful, so use it to inspire. Our challenge nowadays is to practice until we bring our self under control and use it to bless other rather than curse. So, think before you hit “send”!
